Final Cut changes length of video and audio on import

Beitrag von bermvda » 02.08.2021, 10:20

Hello and thanks for reading. I am having a weird problem with Final Cut, and I have had it from the beginning. When I import a video, final cut automatically lengthens the video and audio a bit. As I work with a lot of musicians, this is a big problem, because it distorts the original sound of the video, and of course the clips are not in the original lenght. I cannot seem to find a solution to this. I have googled for hours.

I already checked the import preferences but there is nothing I see that looks wird.

Would be great if anybody had a solution!

Thanks,

Steffen

There is no speed change on import. No way.

Possible exception: smart phone videos with variable framerate. Is ist that what you are importing?

Thanks for the reply and no - they are not smartphone videos... The framerate changes unfortunately and you can really hear it (and see it in the length of the video)... It happens will ALL of the videos that are imported with music - so not if its a video with original sound... Do you have any other ideas? Or is there a preference for the frame rate that it doesn't change upon import?

So what's your frame rate?

Another hint, which is not related to import, but a fact you might encounter:

For Europe, fcp has intelligent automatic conforming built in for 24fps to 25fps and vice versa. Meaning: if you drop a 24fps clip into a 25fps timeline, it will be automatically conformed by a slight speed up of about 4%, keeping all frames intact without any interpolation. A standard process since many decades for bringing 24fps content into the "PAL" world. For example, movies on DVD or TV are always about 4% shorter/faster/sped up.

Vice versa (25fps to 24fps), the content is slightly slowed down.

So: do you have 24fps footage and a 25fps timeline or vice versa? If so, the solution is to simply match footage and project fps, no more speed changes then.

Thanks for getting back to me. In my final cut, new projects are always in 23,98, the videos I am trying to import have a framerate of 25. Then that is probably the problem? Is there a way for fcp to automatically adjust the frame rate? For example, when I edit a longer video and import videos with different frame rates, that they all end up the same without changing the length etc? THANKS

If the videos are 25, then edit in 25!

Yes i understand, but often times some videos are in 24, some in 25, and I use them all in the same project :-)

This is, how fcpx deals with different framerates:
https://alex4d.com/notes/item/final-cut ... te-conform

So your 'weird problems' are quite normal.

What I would do: Figure out, wich kind of footage you do have for majority and use this as the project´s framerate.
if this is 25, then
speed up the 23.9/24 clips by values from the list above
or
convert them before importing into fcpx.

for the next time give all your clients a mandatory briefing on framerates, you need.

brgds,
chris
